Alfonza Knight, Graves Award Winner, Makes Draft Call To Palmer

Honor highlights passion, hustle of longtime scout

The final day of the draft, especially the last couple of rounds, are often considered the scouts' portion of the weekend. By the time you are that deep into the weeds, it's the grinders that look at these players for months that determine how good a team's choices might be.

It was fitting, then, when the Cardinals were on the clock in the sixth round, GM Monti Ossenfort turned to area scout Alfonza Knight Saturday afternoon, handed him a piece of paper with the team's choice -- UAB wide receiver Tejhaun Palmer -- and asked him for a favor.

"Come make a phone call for me," Ossenfort said, and Knight dialed up Palmer to tell him the Cardinals were about to select him.

Earlier in the day, Knight had earned the team's Rod Graves Award, which goes to the team's top scout. It is based on the scout who most exhibits what it means to do such a job with the Cardinals, including passion and drive, hustle, competency in evaluations, and putting the team first. It is named after the team's former GM.

Graves Zoomed in to the Cardinals' draft room to take part in the ceremony for Knight. Knight has been with the organization for nearly 10 years.

"You all know I'm passionate about this," Knight said after getting the award. "There is nothing that is going to take me away from this."
