First Cardinals Cuts To 77 Produce Long Snapper

Canaday the pick as Dillon released; Jenkins placed on IR after tearing ACL

Rookie Kam Canaday has won the long-snapping job left vacant when Mike Leach retired.

The Cardinals still have 22 roster moves left next week to get down to the 53 mandated for the start of the regular season.

But the first round of moves Monday, to get to the 75 required this week -- they have 77 on the roster, still needing two more moves by Tuesday -- also carried some storylines.

With still a preseason game left, the Cardinals made their decision on long snapper, cutting rookie Danny Dillon in favor of Kam Canaday. Another move came with the need to place veteran cornerback Mike

Jenkins, who tore his right ACL against the Texans Sunday on a non-contact play, on season-ending injured reserve.

"He had the chance to be the No. 2 corner," coach Bruce Arians said.

Instead, that number has been whittled down to rookie Brandon Williams and veteran Justin Bethel, although the Jenkins' injury greatly increases the chance Cariel Brooks makes the final roster as well as a fourth cornerback and special teamer.

As for Canaday, Arians said it was close but Canaday had an edge in both speed and accuracy

"They both battled it out extremely hard," Arians said. "We were really confident in both of them."

The full list of roster moves the Cardinals made to get down to 77:

-- Guard Jake Bernstein

-- Wide receiver Amir Carlisle

-- Tight end Gerald Christian

-- Tackle Clay DeBord

-- Long snapper Daniel Dillon

-- Defensive tackle Iosia Iosia

-- Cornerback Asa Jackson

-- Wide receiver Franky Okafor

-- Cornerback Shaun Prater

-- Punter Garrett Swanson

-- Safety Tyrequek Zimmerman

-- QB Jake Coker (knee) was waived-injured, and CB Mike Jenkins was put on IR.

The Cardinals play Thursday and are expected to have their initial roster of 53 over the weekend.

"These (cuts) were fairly easy compared to what Friday will be like," Arians said.
