Budda Baker doesn't go home to Seattle much anymore. Much of his family has moved to Arizona or other places, and Baker himself says "I like the heat" whether that be Arizona or elsewhere in the offseason.
(Perhaps that could be a good sign when it comes to Baker's future, still an unknown when his contract ends after this season. But I digress.)
But even if you take Baker out of Seattle, you can't take Seattle out of the Cardinals Pro Bowl safety. As he talked about another visit to play his hometown team on Sunday when the Cards visit the Seahawks, Baker reminded everyone he did not lose a high school football game on his way to three state championships (he did not play varsity as a freshman.)
Baker also noted he has a specific routine he has when the Cardinals visit Seattle. As soon as the Cardinals reach their hotel, Baker goes to visit the gravesite of his older brother, Robert, who was murdered in Budda's second season with the Cardinals in 2018.
"I'll have a couple of words and hang out for a second," Baker said.
Budda called Robert "the laughter of the family" and said his brother would just be happy for him.
Last year, it was the trip to Seattle that was Budda's first game back from IR after his hamstring tear. The game in Seattle is meaningful. And even without family to see, there are friends, like trainer Tracy Ford, with whom Budda has a long relationship since seventh grade, and whose gym is where Baker in high school worked alongside Seahawks stars like Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright.
That's another piece of Seattle that has never been lost on Baker, the lessons learned alongside such NFL stalwarts. One of them? "Don't cheat the grind," Baker said.
That's never been a problem for Budda, who is in the midst of a stellar season. Again.
