Bill Belichick Goes To School And Mack Wilson Is Intrigued

Cardinals linebacker played two years for legendary coach

Bill Belichick, college coach. Crazy to even type that out. But here we are with the best coach in NFL history -- I don't think that's debatable, although Andy Reid, if he goes long enough, might have a strong argument -- going to the University of North Carolina for his next (final) job.

"It's going to be dope to see, honestly," said Cardinals linebacker Mack Wilson Sr., who played for Belichick and the Patriots in Belichick's final two seasons before Wilson signed with the Cards as a free agent in March. "I'm going to talk to him for sure. I've got some young guys coming up."

Because the Patriots and Cardinals -- who happen to be playing each other on Sunday -- rarely meet, Belichick's paths with this franchise didn't cross all that often. As Patriots coach, Belichick went against the Cardinals six times, with New England winning five of those. He also coached at State Farm Stadium twice in memorable Super Bowls (losing on the David Tyree catch, winning on the Malcolm Butler interception.)

He also had a deep admiration for wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, one of the reasons that there were a handful of seasons there when it was a popular rumor (and a rumor was all it was) that Fitz might be traded to the Patriots. (He also appreciated Adrian Wilson's game, which is why the Patriots signed Wilson for a year after the Cardinals let A-Dub go. Wilson ended up spending the year on IR.)

Now, he'll try and bring a pro game feel to college, which, frankly, is much easier now in the world of transfer portals and NIL riches.

"Hey, if I had a kid that was coming out of high school," Wilson said, "I'm sending him to Bill right now."

For me, I'm just waiting for the time when the student reporter from the Daily Tar Heel asks a question he'd rather not answer, and he tells the kid, "We're on to Wake Forest."
