Budda Baker has done a nice job in limited action the first two weeks of the season, and coach Bruce Arians would like to get his rookie safety more playing time on defense.
There's one problem: There isn't much room for him in the secondary.
The Cardinals use three safeties a majority of the time on defense, but Tyrann Mathieu, Tyvon Branch and Antoine Bethea are performing at such a level that it doesn't make sense to take them off the field.
"Those guys are playing fantastic, so you're not taking snaps away from them," Arians said.
When Baker has found work over the first two games, it's been as the fourth safety, which will generally only come in clear passing situations. If he remains the team's sixth defensive back, it will be tough to get him regular work.
Baker is keeping busy on special teams and has done a nice job there. When he does get his rare chance on defense, Baker said he tries not to treat it any differently than a normal snap.
"When I'm out there, I just believe I'm a starter," Baker said. "I don't really think about, 'Hey, this is my first play out.'"
Depth is great to have, and if any of the safeties ahead of him get injured, Baker will be thrust into a formidable role. For now, he bides his time.
"They'll be like, 'Hey, you have this package,'" Baker said. "'We might play it or we might not. At the end of the day, just be ready.'"
