With the deadline to re-sign franchised linebacker Karlos Dansby just over a month away (July 15) before he is locked into his one-year deal until after the season, general manager Rod Graves said he had a "fruitful conversation" with Dansby agent Todd France last week and was scheduled to talk to France again this week.
"We will continue to keep a dialogue going and hopefully keep making progress," Graves said. "Our objective is obviously to get (Karlos) extended by July 15. At this point I don't want to say if I think that will be accomplished or not accomplished. But I do believe he wants to be here and we want him here, and I believe as long as we keep working toward that end, something positive will happen."
If Dansby reaches July 15th without a deal, it seems an automatic he will hit the open market come March. It's unlikely the Cards, already paying Dansby $9.7 million this season, will franchise Dansby a third straight year (which would jack up his salary to probably somewhere in the $14-to-$15 million range, thanks to tag rules). I have no doubt Dansby would like to stay in Arizona and with close friend Adrian Wilson, but I also have no doubt Dansby wants it to be at his price – whatever that price may be.
P.S. For those who have been waiting, training camp dates are expected to be released tomorrow.
