La Joya High School (Avondale) running back Jeremiah Cornist has been named this week's Arizona Cardinals and Wells Fargo "High School Player-of-the-Week."
Cornist ran for a state record 368 yards on 20 carries (18.4 yard avg.) and five touchdowns in the Lobos 42-41 victory over Valley Vista High School last Friday night. Cornist's 368 yards broke former Hamilton High School star and current Baltimore Ravens defensive end Terrell Suggs' record of 367 yards which he set in 1999. Cornist also added a sixth touchdown on a 38-yard reception.
The sixth-year Arizona Cardinals Football Club "Player-of-the-Week" award, presented by Wells Fargo, is selected by a local sports panel consisting of Cardinals Director of Community Relations Luis Zendejas, Community Relations Coordinator Sheldon Meeks, Sports 620 AM anchor Paul Calvisi, NBC-12 sports reporter Bruce Cooper, 16-year Arizona high school football official Bob Ferreira, Cardinals radio analyst and Sports 620 AM talk show host Ron Wolfley, AIA Director of Media Marketing Brian Bolitho, former Arizona high school coach Emil Nasser, 1060 AM radio host Dan Manucci, and Wells Fargo representative Jeff Smith.
A football plaque acknowledging the award will be presented to Cornist by a Cardinals alumnus at a ceremony at La Joya Community High School (11650 W. Whyman Avenue, Avondale) on Thursday, October 9 at 8:00 a.m. prior to the beginning of the team's practice.
