Mistakes Happen (Once), And Training Camp Aftermath

Jonathan Gannon understands that mistakes will be made at practice. In the end, that's the whole point -- it's practice. But the leash isn't infinite.

The Cardinals coach noted a moment where a player -- presumably on offense, since Gannon said OC Drew Petzing would be someone to talk to about the issue -- made a mistake on Wednesday and then made the same mistake on Thursday. "That's not going to fly," Gannon said.

"I understand you're going to make mistakes, but when you are in that same situation and the same play or the same call on defense, you've got to see it corrected," Gannon said. "Not that it never happens, because it does, but that's what you're looking for: OK, you made a mistake, we corrected it, we took you through it, yada yada yada, now go execute it the right way, because it shows me you're getting better."

-- Gannon said it is an "ongoing" conversation about how much Kyler Murray will play in the preseason opener Aug. 10 against the Saints. Murray's playing time in the preseason will be interesting to watch; he of course wasn't available to Gannon last preseason (and in fact, QB1 in last year's preseason, Colt McCoy, didn't make it to the regular-season roster.)

-- Gannon said he talked to both Will Hernandez and Mack Wilson Sr. about Thursday's near-scuffle and everything was ironed out.

-- In Friday's practice, it felt like the defense had the upper hand. That showed early, when safety Budda Baker -- who notably did not have an interception or pass breakup last season -- nearly had the former and definitely the latter when he knocked down a Kyler Murray downfield throw to Chris Moore. There was also an 11-on-11 play when rookie edge Xavier Thomas got heavy pressure on QB Desmond Ridder (in live football it might've been a sack) forcing a quick throw which was deflected. Linebacker Jesse Luketa ended up making a spectacular diving interception.

-- That didn't mean there weren't offensive highlights. Ridder made a beautiful touch throw down the field to rookie Xavier Weaver, who made an excellent catch while contested by Kei'Trel Clark. Later, Kyler made a great back-shoulder down-the-field throw to Zay Jones, who made an equally excellent catch. Jones has been good early in camp.

-- A couple of rookie notes: Christian Jones is working at left tackle right now, behind both Paris Johnson Jr. and Kelvin Beachum. And yes, his nickname might be Rabbit, but Dadrion Taylor-Demerson looks very much sized for safety -- he is thicker than you'd expected in the backside and his legs.

-- The Cardinals have their next practice on Sunday, which is open to season ticket members only. The next practice open to the public is on Monday. As always, tickets (which are free) are needed.
