No More Weight And See For Mike Iupati

Notes: Jones remains day-to-day; Cardinals add rookie linebacker

Cardinals guard Mike Iupati reported to camp at 327 pounds, the lightest he's ever reported.

Guard Mike Iupati, who struggled at times last season after reaching the Pro Bowl in 2015, reported to training camp at 327 pounds – the lightest of his career.

"I really like the way Mike Iupati looks at 327 instead of 347," coach Bruce Arians said.

Iupati, who said he reported to camp around 342 pounds last year, likes the idea of already coming to camp

light. Normally, he said, he reports to camp a little heavy and has to lose some weight. This offseason, he got a chef, who prepares many meals.

There's no food that is off-limits, necessarily. But the veteran said he has done better controlling his portions. He said he didn't necessarily feel heavy last season but knows there are steps needed to stay in shape, especially later in his career. (Iupati is going into his eighth season, making $8 million in salary.)

"I just hope it transitions on the field," Iupati said.

Arians said the team has long talked to Iupati about his weight. Iupati happened to come in lighter this time around.

"It should help his stamina and he's a great athlete for a big man, so he should be more athletic," Arians said.

Iupati weighed about 330 pounds during his playing days with the 49ers before coming to Arizona as a free agent. Someone asked him if his lighter weight made him aerodynamic.

"Yeah," Iupati said. "Got a haircut, so everything feels good."

JARVIS JONES STILL DAY-TO-DAY

Saying Jarvis Jones' injury description was "above my pay grade," Arians reiterated the linebacker was day-to-day after being placed on the non-football-injury list with a quadriceps problem.

"It's not a pulled muscle," Arians said. "It's some kind of vessel injury."

The Cardinals appeared to get through their first practice of camp without any further injury. The work Saturday and Sunday follows the same rules as the offseason OTAs and minicamp, with limited contact. Full contact will be permitted starting with Monday's practice.

CARDINALS ADD A LINEBACKER

The Cardinals made a roster move Saturday, releasing rookie center Lucas Crowley and signing rookie linebacker Tevin Floyd. Floyd, from The Citadel, was a tryout player at the Cardinals' rookie minicamp in May.
