The New York Jets picked their new general manager on Saturday by going with Denver Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey.
If the name sounds familiar, it should. (OK, maybe should is a little strong, but it absolutely does to me, and it goes further than a guy who knows the right way to spell his first name.) Mougey is from Scottsdale, having prepped at Chaparral High School, and then spent an offseason and preseason with the Cardinals as a wide receiver back in 2010.
Sure, those of you who think back to the preseason of 2010 are going to first recall a year in which the Cardinals saw Kurt Warner retire, Anquan Boldin traded, and a QB battle between Matt Leinart, Derek Anderson, rookie John Skelton and the moxie of Max Hall. But Mougey, who played QB in high school but moved to wide receiver at San Diego State, was there too. He had just one catch for eight yards before getting hurt and eventually released.
By the time 2012 rolled around, Mougey knew his playing days were done, and got a job with the Denver Broncos as a scouting intern, working his way up the ladder and surviving the changeover when Sean Payton arrived last year. And now he's going to have the job to retool the Jets.
