Seeking Consistency, And Colts Joint Practice Aftermath

Before Wednesday night's joint practice with the Colts, Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said what he wanted to see from his offense was "execution, technique, do what you're coached to do."

It was interesting to see Gannon spend the majority of his time during the workout watching his offense, with the defense (and the Colts offense) on an adjacent field. The battle for the backup quarterback is a real thing, and since Kyler Murray isn't going to play preseason games, these two workouts against the Colts are as close as he's going to get to prepping for a game.

The results were mixed for Murray and the offense against the Colts. For most of the practice, the QB looked good and continues to have obvious chemistry with wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr., Michael Wilson and Greg Dortch. But in the final stretch of 11-on-11 with ones vs. ones, there were likely too many hiccups for Gannon's liking -- a couple of penalties, a fumbled snap, a sack. The final play for the 2s was a Clayton Tune interception.

It was reminiscent in some ways of the Cardinals' first of two joint practices in Minnesota last year. The Cardinals were much better the second day.

-- In the final stretch of plays for the Cardinals defense, the first Colts unit moved it too easily on the Cardinals, culminating on a TD pass (of about 40 yards) from Anthony Richardson to Michael Pittman Jr. over Sean Murphy-Bunting. It was a beautiful throw.

-- Tight end Trey McBride's soft hands simply make you take notice every time he catches the ball. I don't know if I've ever seen him fight a pass.

-- Edgerrin James, Hall of Famer and starting Cardinals running back in their Super Bowl appearance, was on hand for the team with whom he starred. Decked out in Colts gear, Edge came over to say hi and noted -- correctly -- that I was one of the few left with the Cardinals. There indeed has been a ton of change since 2008.

-- Gannon promised there would be no fights and there never was anything close. The heaviest hits came on special teams. DeeJay Dallas trucked a Colt on a kickoff return (and a Colt tried to return the favor on an ensuing return), and former Colt Zach Pascal provided an audible pop against a Colts blocker as Pascal was covering a Colts kickoff return.

-- Returning to practice for the Cardinals: RB Emari Demercado, CB Garrett Williams, CB Max Melton, DL Justin Jones.

-- Murray had one pick, and yes, the end wasn't great, but his connections with MHJ were noticeable and on a day when all eyes were on Harrison, that means something.

-- Undrafted rookie Xavier Weaver made another nice grab (7-on-7 work from Desmond Ridder) and between his receiving skills and special teams possibility, Weaver is a guy who is making a strong push to make the 53.

-- Inside linebacker Owen Pappoe, who is having a good camp and played well in the Saints preseason opener, drew a collective gasp from the Colts crowd when he picked off Colts backup QB Joe Flacco and "returned" it for a touchdown.

"It was cool, man," Pappoe said. "Tried to bait him a little bit, didn't even see me coming. Had a really good break and took it to the crib."

-- Before practice, Harrison said he didn't have an update on when the public would be able to buy his jersey. Harrison and Fanatics, the company that would make them, are currently in a dispute.
