While it wasn't the main thrust of my conversation, while interviewing coach Chris Miller last week I did talk to him about the other QBs. One of the things Miller brought up was the footwork issue will all three reserves – Matt Leinart, Brian St. Pierre and Tyler Palko. Miller has incorporated more video study of the footwork already. After voluntary conditioning and strength work a couple of times a week, a member of the video department going out to film the QBs while they throw to receivers. Mostly, it's been the lefties Leinart and Palko, because Kurt Warner (hip rehab) and St. Pierre (back) have had to be careful.
Miller called Palko's footwork "nasty" and is a work in progress. Miller also said after watching Leinart in organized team activities from 2008, he noticed "the ball was all over the place" because of Leinart's improper footwork. For a tall QB (Leinart is 6-foot-5), Miller said footwork is even more important.
"Matt hasn't played a whole lot at this level yet, and he had the luxury at USC to just stand back and pat it," Miller said. "The wrong footwork can make the ball sail, or go right into the ground. Matt is such an accurate passer when the footwork is correct."
