The Cardinals are in the middle of contract talks with both Karlos Dansby and Adrian Wilson, talks that have resumed now that the team has gotten through the draft and minicamp. We'll see what happens with Wilson – who definitely needs a new deal – but nothing has changed my mind that Dansby will be all but impossible to extend, not after Karlos’ comments when he changed his agents (he now has Todd France). Dansby gets almost $10 million this season as is and if he avoids injury, he thinks he can hit the jackpot as a free agent next offseason. In reality, this will be his lone chance to be a big-time free agent, and sometimes I think Dansby also wants a chance to be the center of attention in a free-agent battle, besides just getting the money. He saw what Calvin Pace got, both with a contract and the Jets flying him around in a helicopter. I wouldn't be shocked if Dansby is looking for the same (Is it worth foregoing the bird-in-the-hand of $20-some-million guaranteed though?)
Wilson needs to be done sooner rather than later, because he will slide into that area where he may want to wait to hit free agency himself if we get into the season. Wilson's cap number is only about $5.5M this season, however, and the Cards have to be careful about upping his cap number when they only have about $5.3M of cap room. That's why extending Dansby (and lowering that $9.7M cap number) was/is so important.
