Trey Benson smiles when he's talking about his current situation, which is basically a lot less playing time than the rookie running back has gotten in his life.
The third-round pick and bellcow back from Florida State had only 10 yards on 11 carries in the big win over the Rams, and only played two snaps (both carries, totaling eight yards) against the Lions. He shrugs it off.
"That's always my vibe," Benson said. "I want everyone to win around me, even the people in my room."
The evolution of the Lions game took the running attack and perhaps more Benson work out of the equation. He's always been a player who liked to get a few snaps in to get a feel for the game, and that's not possible right now. Again, he waves it off. "Now, I'm like, 'I don't care, once I get in I'll make the best of it' because I don't know when I'll get in again," he said.
The Cardinals were always going to lean on veteran James Conner in the backfield. Emari Demercado is a better blocker. Benson is going to have to keep earning those snaps.
He also has noticed how much faster the running holes close than in college -- "You look at it and look away for a second, it's gone" -- and how much quicker the defenders get to the ball from all over the field.
But there are no complaints here. Benson gets it, in terms of understanding he's figuring it all out.
"I feel like it's a blessing in disguises, honestly," Benson said, motioning over to Conner's nearby locker. "Still learning behind that guy. He's a dog, man."
"I'm not used to it," Benson added. "But when my time comes, I'll be ready."
