You've Got Mail: Pretty Soon, It'll Be Drafty In Here

Topics include Peterson's return, Brissett in the QB room, and feeling ancient

P2 and CC pro bowl mailbag 0415

It's been a week. Calais Campbell shows up. The owner goes into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame. Patrick Peterson officially announces his retirement. The draft is now nine days away, and yet -- for me at least -- it doesn't feel like we've talked draft in forever. (I'm sure everyone will bring me back to it quick.) Peterson and Campbell were two awesome draft picks, by the way. Questions have been edited for length and clarity. Don't forget to send a question for a future mailbag with at least a first name and last initial.

From Lonnie K:

"Hi Darren, happy to see Patrick Peterson retire as a Cardinal. The split was bitter, but for us he is the GOAT at CB. Welcome home P2. P.S. Don't want to forget Calais Campbell, we missed the big man. Welcome home C.C."

I understand all the reasons why Peterson's retirement was viewed differently among some fans, but I don't really understand why it shouldn't be embraced. It's always better for organizations to work with their former legends in the retirement and the Cardinals want to improve in that area. Yes, he said some harsh things. But frankly, if every player who had issues with a long-time team was permanently shunned -- and I'm talking across the NFL -- we'd have a whole lot of good players without post-career relationships and that's just dumb. Time should heal wounds. No reason for it not to.

From John T:

"Darren, what do we do and whom do we draft? We signed three more DL so maybe this year we can stop the quarterback from sitting in the pocket all day? A second-year MHJ should look like our TE this year. Draft a receiver? Draft an O-lineman? Get to the QB this season? Sign a free-agent edge? This time of year is great for guessing and hoping. I just know after the last two drafts I have full confidence in MO! Thank you Darren!"

Soon we will know. I'm not ruling anything out. I think they'd love to get a guard in the draft and maybe a tackle, and an edge and perhaps, yes, another defensive lineman. A wide receiver, perhaps. There is no reason to rule anything out. If you are doing it right, you just want good players.

From Paul G:

"Hey Durb, these are not questions but just some feedback from the most recent mailbag.

  1. My question regarding drafting a corner was 'need.' Seems that, based on your response, and your comments on the Underground, you and I agree there is not a NEED to draft a corner. It will likely happen if the perceived best player available is a corner.
  2. You may want to re-read the question from Carl Couch regarding Calais and No. 93. He was not suggesting we release Justin Jones. He was only suggesting Jones to 'release 93' voluntarily.

I always enjoy your stuff, thanks."

Yes, I do think there isn't a CB need but that doesn't mean they won't take a CB. If you think you can upgrade, why not? As for the Justin Jones No. 93 question, I haven't looked back and maybe he was talking about releasing the number and not Jones, but obviously I felt he was going stronger than that. I hope Campbell can wear 93. But I'm not going to hold it against Jones if he declines. I don't think anyone should.

From Matthew Stroh:

"Hey Darren, thank you for the mailbag. I don't mess with a lot of the offseason stuff. I don't see the point stressing who we are going to get and or draft. But I do love the mailbag and Cardinals Underground year around. I love the signings that Monti did. Do you see any disadvantage of signing Jacoby Brissett? Also do you believe if Murray doesn't have a good year Brissett gives Monti more options down the road? Also, at CB we have a lot are young guys but I thought they played pretty good last year. Why do people think we need a CB bad in the draft? Won't a pass rush from the DL or pass rusher help the cornerbacks? Thank you so much Darren you're the best."

No, there is no disadvantage to signing Brissett. He's a vet, he's a good addition to the locker room (and the QB room), and can help Kyler. I'm not getting into what happens next year. Let's see what happens this season first -- there is a lot that still has to play out. As for cornerback, this is the time of year where speculation abounds. Yes, a better pass rush can help with the coverage. As I noted above, I don't see a need for a corner, but it would be malfeasance by Monti to ignore the possibility to draft one.

From Jason W:

"Good afternoon sir. I know this may not be a direct question but more of a light inquiry of an opinion. I was totally on the Marvin Harrison hype train but after watching him in this offense and seeing how well they ran the ball and used tight ends in this system, what really was the point of using a first-round pick on a receiver? It seems like we would have been better off drafting a lineman like Alt or whoever they may have liked. This is not a attack on Harrison it is more of a question about the use of the position and spending a top pick on it. Thank you for your time, have a great day!"

You can argue about the need to draft a wide receiver in the first round. That's an overarching philosophical thing that obviously Monti does not have a issue doing. Now, talking about last year's draft, there is a ton of conversation and planning that goes into an offseason and a draft. They knew who was available in free agency (a tackle like Jonah Williams) and knew what was coming in the draft (MHJ and Malik Nabers) and did the breakdowns with all the receivers and tackles coming out. They made that particular call. The Cardinals needed a high-level receiver.

From Ian Tapper:

"Hi Darren, it's been a while since I've asked a question so I have a few I have been thinking of over the past few months. Any answers would be appreciated but feel free to pick only the questions you decide works for your mailbag or remove some if the list is too long. Thanks again for time answering us fans questions. It's great to be able to interact with our favorite team in ways such as your mailbag.

  1. There have been a lot of teams pursue private equity funding since the changes to allow the teams to do so. Do you know if the Cardinals are looking into this?
  2. Is Mr. Bidwill the sole owner of the Cardinals or are there other part owners?
  3. You have indicated in some mailbag answers and on the podcasts a couple of times that the business part of the Cardinals (media included) has moved to a different building then where the players are. Was this move initiated by Mr. Ossenfort?
  4. There were reports Kliff Kingsbury was pursued heavily by some clubs to be a head coach but he decided to stay with the Commanders. I was curious if he opted not to take a head coaching job, could that sort of decision be leveraged by the Cardinals to avoid paying him the balance of his contract?
  5. I had seen a Will Hernandez interview and he mentioned he was in the Cardinals building all year even after the injury. Were Jones and Nichols in the building rehabbing after there injuries as well or did they chose to rehab themselves elsewhere?
  6. Do you think the jersey lawsuit bothered Harrison and/or hurt his production even just a little?
  7. We hear from time to time about some free agents the Cardinals were in on. This year, it appears they were in on Milton Williams. Do you know of any others they pursued but were unsuccessful?
  8. Any word on Matt Prater? I thought he'd sign somewhere by now.
  9. With the Cardinals free agents such as Prater, Hernandez, or K. White that have not returned, why is that? And could it have to do with compensatory picks?

Fear not Ian. The beauty of the internet is that we can be flexible with the length of the mailbag. Can't promise everyone will read them all. But we'll try to make it interesting.

  1. I do not know. Would be surprised, but I have no info one way or the other.
  2. The Bidwill family owns the franchise, but Michael runs the show.
  3. The move was initiated by ownership after a change in business practices grew the organization so large the Dignity Health Training Center was no longer big enough for all the employees. A new space was needed.
  4. No. He is employed.
  5. I saw Hernandez a couple of times, I saw Jones and Nichols maybe once each. I don't know where the rehab was being done; it's possible rehab was happening at the facility but if they did not come in the locker room during media availability, I wouldn't have seen them.
  6. Not in the least.
  7. Milton Williams is the only one that has come out. I don't know anyone else, although that doesn't mean they weren't. Unless a player is going to mention specifics in an interview, teams usually don't want to talk about the guys they did not get.
  8. I have not heard about Prater's status, but it seems pretty clear the Cardinals are sticking with Ryland and will be moving on from the vet.
  9. While Monti Ossenfort said he hasn't closed any doors, there are a lot of factors. Comp picks aren't one; the Cardinals signed too many other guys. I would guess that money is the main issue, and playing time might be too. At this point, it behooves teams and players to wait until after the draft so a player can get to the right situation.

From Brandon Scott:

"I'm sorry Darren. I'm sure this is old hat for you at this point, but P2 is the first player that I saw drafted (in fact I was at the Cardinals draft party on the Great Lawn) who played a long career, and has now retired. And buddy do I feel ANCIENT. Have you had an NFL 'this makes me feel old' moment that stands out?"

Oh Brandon, Brandon, Brandon. Have I had a "this makes me feel old" moment? How about when the Cardinals started filling half (or more) of their roster with guys younger than my son? I too was around from P2's start to finish. I was around for Adrian Wilson's start to finish. I was around for Larry Fitzgerald -- who played 17 seasons -- start to finish. I am about to be around for Calais Campbell's start to finish in Year 18 -- and I had already covered the Cardinals for eight seasons before Campbell was even drafted.

So ... yeah.
