The Cardinals released running backs Marion Grice and Robert Hughes on Friday.
Both spent time on the team's practice squad in 2015 and re-signed on Jan. 26. Grice and Hughes were each part of the Cardinals' active roster in 2014.
Grice had 15 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown that year and scored in the Cardinals' playoff loss to the Panthers. He played collegiately at Arizona State. Hughes contributed mostly as a blocker and on special teams. He was beaten out by Stepfan Taylor for the Cardinals' fourth running back spot in training camp last year.
The move leaves the Cardinals with five running backs on the roster – Taylor, David Johnson, Chris Johnson, Andre Ellington and Kerwynn Williams. David Johnson is expected to be the starter, with Chris Johnson and Ellington giving coach Bruce Arians options in the ground game.
The Cardinals could look to add to the position in the offseason, but have nice depth already with the current group.
