Running back Elijhaa Penny was one of seven practice-squad players the Cardinals re-signed for the 2017 season.
The Cardinals have their No. 1 running back. There is an opportunity at No. 2.
Maybe Elijhaa Penny can fit that role.
Penny was one of seven practice squad members the Cardinals signed to "future" deals Tuesday, locking them up for 2017 ahead of the beginning of free agency in March. The full list of those returning, aside from Penny:
LB Cap Capi
WR Marvin Hall
WR Chris Hubert
G Kaleb Johnson
OL Daniel Munyer
CB Ronald Zamort
Penny, an undrafted rookie out of Idaho, spent the season on the practice squad after an impressive preseason. He showed enough promise that coach Bruce Arians discussed him Monday in the final press conference of 2016.
"That's another one I can't wait to see, because he became a pretty good special teams player and could fill a role as a big back," Arians said. "He's got good hands. He's done a great job on our scout team all year, so he's got a real good future."
Chris Johnson, Andre Ellington and Stepfan Taylor are all scheduled to become unrestricted free agents at the running back position.
