Garrett Williams Two-Way Go, And Training Camp Aftermath

As the Cardinals went through the offseason one of the big questions was who was going to be CB2. It turns out CB2 might've been here all along.

Second-year man Garrett Williams, who was already expected to play the slot -- which is where he played last year -- has been the other outside cornerback across from from Sean Murphy-Bunting often when the Cardinals are in a base defense. He moves to the slot when the Cardinals are in nickel, with either Max Melton or Starling Thomas V sliding outside.

"Honestly it was always the plan for him when we took him," coach Jonathan Gannon said. "He's doing a good job at it."

With the way NFL offenses operate, Williams figures to play nickel most of the time. Melton, with his second-round status, should push hard to be that third cornerback on the field.

Much was made, understandably so, of Kyler Murray coming back from his ACL tear last season. But Williams, a third-round pick in part because of his knee, was also rehabbing when the season began. The Cardinals gambled on his return, and it looks prescient. But it also played into a slow roll as a rookie.

"Last year where we thought he was, health and all that, we kind of just left him in the one spot," Gannon said. "But when we drafted him this was the plan and the vision for him. It's kind of cool seeing it come to life. He can handle it."

-- Gannon praised the work of second-year offensive lineman Jon Gaines II, who is coming back from an ACL tear, saying the Cardinals were "very pleased" with Gaines' progress, especially considering how much time Gaines missed. Gaines has been working primarily at the guard spots so far in camp.

-- The Cardinals had their first injury of camp when center Hjalte Froholdt went down after he was rolled up on from behind. Froholdt was down for a time but eventually got up and made the long walk to the locker room under his own power. We'll see what if anything coach Jonathan Gannon says Thursday; the Cardinals are off Wednesday.

-- Evan Brown jumped to center after Froholdt went out. Gaines and rookie Isaiah Adams then got work at left guard with Brown moving over.

-- Darius Robinson had a good day as he makes inroads for playing time, including what would have been a "sack" of Desmond Ridder had it been a game.

-- LInebacker Owen Pappoe made an interception of Clayton Tune in the end zone when Tune tried to hit Tip Reiman in double coverage. The next play, Tune got his TD pass in the same corner of the end zone to Zach Pascal.

-- Marvin Harrison Jr. also made the kind of catch that the Cardinals are counting on. Working on red zone plays, a Kyler throw to Harrison in the back corner of the end zone was caught despite Garrett Williams being all over him and drawing a pass interference flag for the play.

-- The Cardinals return to practice Thursday. Practices Thursday, Friday and Saturday are all open, with Saturday's being the annual Red and White Practice.
