As the draft gets closer, one topic that has been referred to often are the visits potential draftees have taken to teams in the leadup process (except the Rams and Jaguars, who chose not to use the majority of those potential meetups.)
Before we go further: These are 30 visits. They are not top 30 visits. That implies a ranking to such players that has never been part of the equation. Once upon long ago, running back Tim Hightower -- whom the Cardinals drafted in the fourth round -- was one of the visits. As an example.
The first-round pick may never come in, for one reason or another.
"It's really players that for whatever reason we want to get more exposure to," GM Monti Ossenfort said. "It could be guys that maybe weren't at an all-star game that we didn't get a chance to interview. Maybe it was guys that the only time we talked to them was at the combine and the combine is an 18-minute conversation.
"There could be something that (head athletic trainer) Drew (Krueger) in the training room wanted to see somebody a little bit more on. Maybe it's just as simple as it's a guy that we want to get a little bit of a better feel for the person. When we have them in our building for seven or eight hours, we get a lot of touch points."
Another key point to make, especially in the age of Skattebo: As long as the team does not provide transportation, they can visit with a college player at their facility as long as the college is within 50 miles of the facility. So while Cam Skattebo may have visited with the Cardinals, it didn't necessarily count toward a 30 visit (and why it makes sense for the Cardinals to talk to any of the Sun Devils they can without it dinging their allotment of 30.)
Ossenfort said there have been names floated out as having visited the Cardinals that actually did not, although not surprisingly he isn't getting detailed about who came in. It's always interesting to ask players as they get drafted about how much pre-draft interaction they have had with the team. (I remember Levi Brown saying there had been really nothing with the Cardinals ahead of time.)
"That's our goal by the end of the day, so if we move forward and end up picking that player, we feel good about what the person is when they walk in our building," Ossenfort said.
