Holding Out For A Hero? Or Maybe Just A Few More Long Passes

Murray, Cardinals would like to have more air explosives

After the Cardinals' win Sunday against the Patriots, Kyler Murray said the offense had been "efficient." They won, they scored points and had yards, but the quarterback definitely gave the vibe that he wanted more from his unit.

That feeling hadn't gone away by the time he talked Wednesday.

"I think there was a couple plays that we left out there," Murray said. "Some explosives that could have been had. I think we have to be better in the pass game, continue to try to find more explosives. (We are) 28th in the league creating those, which is pretty low."

Murray is correct in the Cardinals being tied for 28th in explosive pass plays, with only 33 completions of 20 yards or more, tied with the Bears. Greg Dortch had a catch-and-run of 39 yards against New England, and you could see what that meant to the team (and the crowd, for that matter.)

But offensive coordinator Drew Petzing noted the Cardinals nearly had 400 yards in the game and had 30 points. Murray didn't have to be superhuman to get there.

"The ordinary can be heroic," Petzing said.

The conversation around the passing game has been a season-long thing, with the learning curve of Marvin Harrison Jr. at the top of the list. But the Cardinals are also playing a poor run defense on Sunday against Carolina, and that figures to be the offense's engine.

Would it be better to get more chunk plays through the air? Of course. The question is whether it's a got-to-have or a like-to-have.

"I think we have to be better -- we're running the ball pretty well -- but we won the game," Murray said. "We won the game and that's all that matters. That's the name of the game. I could really care less about the stats. We have to win."
