Kyler Murray Continues To Show Off The Wheels

Quarterback enjoying finding space to run this season

It's always fun when the quarterback is the one to wear an in-game mic, and even better when the QB wears one in a game when he races 44 yards for an electric touchdown.

After that play Monday, Kyler Murray is talking to assistant equipment manager Pat Coleman on the sideline when Coleman said, "Surprised you ain't do nothing crazy this time."

Murray replied, "Why?

"Remember that play in San Fran when you put your finger up?"

"I was about to," Murray admitted.

That would've been something, had Murray indeed raised his finger well outside the end zone again, like he did on his 50-yard TD run against the 49ers. In that game, Murray celebrated early and then screamed at the crowd behind the end zone. The mics prove he didn't do the same against the Chargers, with his teammates providing the soundtrack on top of the roar of the crowd.

But Murray, reflecting on Wednesday about the two long TD runs already this season, is enjoying the free space.

"I've never really had the opportunity to get into the open like that in my career in the NFL," Murray said. "It's fun. It's fun anytime you get to show off the ability God blessed you with."

Murray is averaging a tad more than nine yards a carry on his 36 rushing attempts this season. He owns five of the eight longest QB runs in franchise history. (Charley Trippi has the longest, a 59-yard TD run in 1952.) Murray's longest was a 57-yarder against the Colts on Christmas in 2021. The 50-yarder was No. 2.

Murray is also only the second QB since 1966 (Super Bowl era) to have two TD runs of at least 40 yards in a season. The others were Justin Fields (3 in 2022), Michael Vick (2002) and Steve McNair (1998).

If he gets a third this season, we'll see what the conversation is like with Coleman then. Although, as Murray said Wednesday when it comes to celebrations, "I'm a low-key dude."
