In Defense Of The Defense

We keep asking whether the Arizona "O" has turned the corner? Hold up. How about equal airtime for the AZ "D"? You know, the group that hasn't allowed a touchdown in two of the last three games. In fact, after holding the Bears to a season-low nine points, the Cards defense is allowing the sixth-fewest points per game (17.0) during the current three-game win streak. (Note: the last time a Cardinals opponent was held under 10 points in a game -- Week 7, 2021.) And if every game plan starts with (everybody now) stopping the run, well, the Cards sport a top five rush defense (92.7 ypg) in Weeks 7-9. With that, the defense of the AZ defense rests.

Airing Out State Farm Stadium

Few quarterbacks throw on the run as well as Kyler Murray. Entering Week 10, when on the run, Murray ranks No. 1 in passer rating and No. 3 in completion percentage, while his five passing touchdowns are the most in the league, according to Next Gen Stats. Murray figures to be on the move a lot on Sunday. The Jets have forced the second-most pass attempts on the run. In other words, they pressure the quarterback. A lot. They are No. 2 in sacks (31) and No. 4 in pressure rate (39.4). Last week against the Bears, Murray wasn't asked to do a lot, and the Cardinals won. He called it "a beautiful thing." Don't expect that to be the norm, however. The Cardinals, to get to where they want to go this season, are going to need Murray to throw the football, be it in or out of the pocket; the latter of which has been very successful.

Beat The Jets, Win The Bye

Players and staff will look at a few different things once the schedule is released. Is the opening game at home or on the road? Do they play any games on holidays? And when is the bye week? For the Cardinals, the bye is next week. For now, their focus is locked in on the Jets. However, Sunday's outcome will shift the trajectory of the bye. Coach Jonathan Gannon admitted that confidence can transfer from week to week. A win cements the Cardinals spot atop the NFC West as they get set to face the Seahawks in two of their next three games. The Jets 3-6 record doesn't mean Sunday's game is going to be a cakewalk. From a 30,000-foot view, New York is a good squad that had a rough stretch. You beat Aaron Rodgers and the Jets, and as offensive coordinator Drew Petzing joked, "the bye week is a little more enjoyable after a win."
