The hope was that Marquis Haynes Sr. could provide some pass rush help after the injury to BJ Ojulari. That didn't work out.

The Cardinals released Haynes on Friday, the day before the team opens the preseason at home against the New Orleans Saints.

Haynes had been signed on Tuesday, the day after Ojulari went on season-ending Injured Reserve with a knee injury. After Ojulari's injury, veteran Dennis Gardeck moved into the starting lineup across from Zaven Collins. The team has also been looking at other potential edge signings in hope of bolstering the position.

Haynes reportedly signed an injury waiver when he was brought in. The official NFL transactions page lists "injury waiver" with the transaction.

Rookie Xavier Thomas in particular has gotten more looks at practice this week for the Cardinals, and the younger edges -- guys like Victor Dimukeje, Jesse Luketa, Tyreke Smith and Cam Thomas -- should all see a lot of playing time against the Saints.
