The Cardinals officially put linebacker Dennis Gardeck on Injured Reserve on Friday, opening up a roster spot going forward.
The team will need a spot next week if they choose to activate Darius Robinsonfrom IR; his practice window closes on Wednesday and the team must make a decision to either put him on the roster or leave him on IR for the balance of the season.
Robinson has yet to fully practice since his window opened more than two weeks ago. He was having further issues with his calf, and he is also dealing with the death of his mother.
Gardeck's immediate role on defense has some internal options. Both Victor Dimukeje and Xavier Thomas have been recent healthy scratches. The Cardinals also have an option to use inside linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. on the edge more often.
Gardeck was in the starting lineup in the first place because projected starter BJ Ojulari also suffered a season-ending ACL tear, his coming in a training camp practice. Gardeck, who was also a key contributor on special teams, finishes the season with three sacks.
