After 'Weird' Of One Rushing Attempt, Kyler Murray Knows His Legs Matter

Quarterback is averaging more than 10 yards a carry this season

Kyler Murray looks back at the game video, looking for the opportunities he might have had to run more often in a game like Sunday. Certainly there are conversations with coaches over what Murray could have -- and maybe should have -- done.

"I feel when I have 3 yards and one rush, yeah I feel a little weird about it," Murray admitted. "That's sometimes how the game plays."

The single rush, which came on a scramble on the first drive of the game, was it for Murray. He had only run the ball once in a game two other times in his NFL career, and one of those was the game in which he tore his ACL on the third play against the Patriots.

Murray's running has been an oft-talked about topic in his six seasons. There is reason -- the Cardinals have never won any of the 15 games Murray has fewer than five rushing attempts (although they did tie once.)

"When I'm running, it just happens," said Murray, who usually does not have many designed runs called for him (or even read option plays.) "It's not something I can go out there and force, which I could. When you see me take off it's the natural flow of the game. But I believe it does open things up."

This season, Murray has scrambled 11 times for 123 yards, including a +36 yards over expected according to Next Gen Stats (which means he has gained 36 more yards than he should have in those 11 times. He already has four runs of at least 10 yards.

He also has taken part in a designed run five times. Those 16 attempts have totaled 164 yards.

"I enjoy running the ball, it's part of what I am able to do," Murray said. "But I'm playing the position and if it happens, it happens."
