Getting Physical, QB2, And Training Camp Aftermath

Pads don't go on until next week, but the first dust-up of camp happened on Day 2, and frankly, Ron Wolfley should take part of the blame.

The Cardinals radio analyst, who doubles as a talk-show host on Arizona Sports, interviewed guard Will Hernandez at lunchtime on Thursday and asked Hernandez right away if he had gotten into a camp fight. Hernandez smiled, since they had only had one practice and of course it hadn't happened.

Then Thursday afternoon it did, kind of. Hernandez and linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. had a brief dust-up after a play, one in which Hernandez said he got "a little carried away."

"It's been many, many months of no football and when you get back into it sometimes that's what happens," Hernandez said. "The point is to check ourselves and make sure we take care of our teammates at the end of the day.

"it's a fine line we have to walk. I need to do better with that."

Coach Jonathan Gannon is not a fan of fights at practice. Hernandez said he'd have a talk later with the coach to clear things up, but emphasized Gannon was busy running a football team and it was up to himself and the players to make sure such things didn't happen (or escalate.)

-- The battle for backup QB will be interesting, and Gannon said it will be a tough decision whether to keep two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. Desmond Ridder, acquired in a trade for Rondale Moore, and Clayton Tune, a 2023 fifth-round pick, will be vying for the role.

"They know it's a healthy competition," Gannon said.

The difference between keeping two or three goes beyond the two, however. When it comes to roster makeup, keeping an extra QB would mean one less somewhere else, and Gannon noted that is always a factor when talking about the guys fighting to make the roster -- whether it is an extra cornerback, or running back, or receiver or offensive lineman. Every decision impacts something else.

-- The first open practice of camp featured much of what has been expected in terms of early lineups. There is rotations going on many spots, but Garrett Williams does look like the guy to be paired with Sean Murphy-Bunting -- for now -- in the rare times there are only two cornerbacks on the field. Rookie Max Melton got some first-team work when it expanded to three, and Starling Thomas V will also get looks.

-- Roy Lopez has been under the radar, but he was getting work with the two top free-agent defensive linemen, Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols on the first unit. Evan Brown was working at left guard with the ones, although again, we are early in the process.

-- Real tackling isn't happening, of course, but the work being done on the run game sure looked like where the Cardinals left off. James Conner looks spry and center Hjalte Froholdt made the point of rookie Trey Benson "I like backs who don't miss their cuts and he doesn't seem to miss his cuts."

-- The Cardinals definitely were working rookie tight end Tip Reiman into the passing game more than he was at Illinois, which isn't saying much but is the nod to his untapped athleticism.

-- Among the passing highlights, Zay Jones, who had a good practice, made a nice catch beating Max Melton on a Clayton Tune throw (although it was 7-on-7 and I'm not sure Tune would have had as much time as he did on a normal play.)

-- Desmond Ridder was picked off by safety Verone McKinley III in 7-on-7, but later in 11-on-11 Ridder made a nice throw to tight end Elijah Higgins (who definitely looks like he put on muscle on his continuing quest to transition from college wide receiver) and also to Zay Jones.

-- Melton dropped what should've been a pick of Tune and then beat himself up over the missed opportunity.

-- Kyler Murray also had a couple of nice throws, finding Marvin Harrison Jr. on the move, hitting Greg Dortch deep and later seeing a wide-open Michael Wilson over the middle.

-- Last word comes from Gannon talking about the new practice jerseys that feature player names, a move executed by head equipment man Jeff Schwimmer. "I love that by Schwim and his staff," Gannon said. "Truthfully that detail I didn't even know. We got out there and was like, 'That looks cool.'"
